Honeybee populations around the world are in decline, due in part to global warming. Bees are some of the most effective pollinators we have. Not only does this decline spell larger ecological problems, but it also means our individual gardens suffer from the lack of pollinators. To increase pollination in gardens, you can do two things: 1. Grow plants that attract pollinators and 2. Keep your own beehives.
Certain species of plants are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinators. For example, in general flowers with one ring of petals have more nectar and therefore draw more bees. Some even believe that certain petal colors are more favorable to pollinators than others. However you begin, you should experiment with species and sizes of plants. This will help you discover which combination is best in your particular area.
If you want to be absolutely sure your garden is well-pollinated, you can keep bees yourself. This also means living more sustainably by giving bee colonies a much-needed place to live. There are a couple things you will need to do to prepare your space and protect yourself before you can keep bees. But once you are prepared, beekeeping takes about as much of your time as gardening. And although beekeeping may seem a bit more troublesome, with the right protective gear, smoker, and knowledge, you will be able to easily and safely take care of your bees.
